Waterfall (Portrait)

Artist Statement

Waterfall (Portrait) was made using water simulation algorithms and was produced in virtual space with software and hardware. Every drop, drip, splash and twist of turbulence was calculated using a raytracing technique that took about 4 weeks. Then the simulated forms were lovingly rendered into frames for a further month. The process from start to finish was about 3 months, to produce 10 minutes of continuous 4K video. Artificial intelligence was also employed to remove some noise, clean up the image and give the final work more fidelity.

By slowing it down the visitor too is invited into this ephemeral virtual world. I hope it is a peaceful, meditative and thoughtful cyberspace. One to wonder at and consider the phenomena of a this fictional waterfall.

By stopping and breathing slowly, the visitor can focus on the falling forms, subtly shifting colour, the spatial playfulness and the details of splashing, dripping and falling on the edges of the picture plane. From a distance we can appreciate the realism and spectacle, and on a closer look we can enter the waterfall as an immersive, simulated environment. A reality of the virtual.
